Why Adult Martial Arts? (Part 1)

Much of the stigma associated with adult martial arts is that participants have developed or are seeking to develop themselves into some type of fighting machine.  This is greatly embellished by the movies.  While self-defense skills are certainly obtained through taekwondo training, is this, or should this be, the primary motivation for adult students?  Especially when you consider the fact that the likelihood of ever needing these self-defense skills is very low.  There are a few professions where the need for these self-defense skills could come up as part of fulfilling your job duties.  But for the vast majority of people this is not the case.  This being said, why should adults train in martial arts?  Here are some of the benefits you will receive if you are a serious adult martial artist.

Physical Fitness

Adult Taekwondo training provides both aerobic and anaerobic conditioning opportunities.  You can burn up to 575 calories in a 45-minute class.  It offers a great deal of variety as no class is exactly like another.  You will see improvements in your cardio, strength, flexibility, and endurance.  You will have a healthier heart and bones and more energy for life’s tasks.  It is an extremely fun way to get into and to stay in shape.

Self Confidence

Whenever you perform successfully in a pressure situation you develop self-confidence.  Testing, which is an integral part of martial arts rank advancement, is an ideal opportunity to perform what you have learned and practiced, under pressure.  When you successfully pass a testing you gain self-confidence that can readily be applied to other areas of your life, such as school, your job, athletics, or volunteer activities.  Success breeds confidence and there are many opportunities for success in taekwondo training.  Employers want people who can remain calm and focused as pressures mount.  Martial arts training will give you this ability

Sense of Achievement

As you progress through the belt ranks there is a tremendous, measurable sense of achievement.  With each rank there are new and more challenging skills for you to develop.  Though the requirements of a new rank may seem daunting at first, after consistent and disciplined practice you are able to achieve the new requirements.   This in turn gives you confidence to do other things in you life.  Start that business.  Run for elected office.   Go for that promotion.  Lead the PTO.

Stop making excuses to yourself.  Take control of your life.  Let adult martial arts help you become the person you dream about.  You won’t regret it.
