Serving Pflugerville since 1999; family-led since 2005. Three generations teach side-by-side at Rise Martial Arts. We offer a unified Karate–Taekwondo hybrid with sport-karate fundamentals built into every program, life-skills coaching through the Warrior Keys, transparent progress tracking with Skill Cards, and no belt testing fees. Students don’t get pieces of a puzzle—they get the whole picture.
Rise Martial Arts is a martial arts school in Pflugerville teaching a Karate–Taekwondo hybrid with sport-karate built into every program.
Rise Martial Arts is Pflugerville’s premier family-led martial arts school, shaped by consistent standards and genuine care. The Barkley family has served the community for 25+ years, creating a rare three-generation teaching tradition. We teach a Karate–Taekwondo hybrid with sport-karate fully integrated into every class. Students develop balanced stance work, authentic power, athletic movement, and composure under pressure—skills that transfer to school, home, and competition.
We serve families looking for karate in Pflugerville with classroom-grade structure: clear goals, deliberate practice, specific feedback, and visible progress. Instructors demonstrate, students drill with purpose, and coaches give tight, actionable cues so each repetition actually builds skill.
Sport-karate fundamentals are built into daily training from day one—distance control, timing, ringcraft, and clean scoring—so students learn how to apply technique under light pressure long before tournaments are even a question. Sparring develops progressively (hands-only → helmet → full pads) so skill and composure grow together at the right pace. Safety comes first: control before speed, technique before power, confidence before competition. To keep progress transparent, we use Skill Cards that make weekly goals and readiness criteria easy to see for students and parents alike.Karate provides structural foundations and fundamental mechanics. Taekwondo contributes dynamic kicks and advanced footwork. Sport-karate shapes tactical timing, strategic thinking, and competitive clarity. We teach these as one integrated curriculum, not separate tracks, so students master forms, powerful kicking, distance management, and competitive tactics together.
Skill Cards make weekly goals and advancement criteria visible, specific, and measurable. Mastery-based promotion means students advance when skills are demonstrated consistently, not on a calendar. Our no belt testing fees policy keeps promotion decisions instructional, never financial. Parents get clear updates on progress and next-level requirements.
Beginners start in Foundation (about 4–5 months) to build core skills and classroom habits. Students then move into the Warrior Program (ages 7+), where training deepens with progressive sparring—hands only, then helmet, then full pads. Sport-karate is part of every program; when a student is prepared and interested, coaches offer tournament opportunities without making competition the point.
| Program | Age / Stage | Primary Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Tiger Program | PreK (ages 4–5) | Fundamentals through play; balance, focus, listening |
| Dragon Program | Ages 5–6 (K–1) | Basic techniques; coordination, confidence, class habits |
| Foundation Program | Ages 7–11 (2nd–6th) | Core techniques; discipline habits; classroom structure; sport-karate fundamentals |
| Warrior Program | Ages 7+ (after Foundation) | Advanced skill development; progressive sparring; leadership habits |
| Teen Program | Ages 12–17 | Hybrid Karate–Taekwondo training; sport-karate built in; conditioning; confidence under pressure |
| Adult Program | Ages 18+ | Hybrid training; mobility and conditioning; practical skills; supportive community |
Note: Sport-karate fundamentals (forms, timing, ringcraft, clean scoring) are integrated into all programs. Tigers and Dragons build foundations without sparring.
Our Warrior Keys framework turns character into action. Students practice Vision, Discipline, Determination, Courage, Confidence, and Respect through hands-on training that builds real-world capability. Each Key is both a principle and a practice—Vision aims effort at clear goals; Discipline bridges intention and consistent action; Courage reframes failure as growth. These aren’t posters—they’re tools students use in class, at school, and at home.

Tammy’s focus on encouraging students to reach their potential — while reinforcing the values of confidence and respect — has made her an anchor for both the school and the families who train here.
Steve Barkley
Instructor & Owner
Steve has been part of Rise Martial Arts since the family took leadership in 2005. With decades of experience as both a martial artist and a mentor, he brings a calm, steady teaching style that emphasizes respect, perseverance, and the value of hard work. His presence on the mats is a reminder of the Barkley family’s multi-generational commitment to martial arts education.
David Barkley
Head Instructor & Program Director
David began training at the school when it first opened in 1999 and was part of the first group to earn a black belt. In 2005, when the Barkley family took leadership of the school, he stepped into teaching and eventually became Head Instructor and Program Director. With more than two decades of experience, David leads classes with a focus on discipline, growth, and the belief that martial arts education builds life skills as much as physical skills.
Ethan Barkley
Instructor
Ethan grew up training at Rise Martial Arts and now teaches alongside his father. He brings energy, relatability, and patience to every class, helping kids and teens see martial arts as a pathway to confidence and resilience. Outside of teaching, Ethan continues to train daily, often practicing before classes begin. He has a passion for competition and uses that experience to inspire students to push themselves and embrace challenges.
Blake Barkley
Instructor
Blake represents the youngest generation of Barkley instructors. His approachable style and focus on connecting with students make him a role model for younger martial artists just beginning their journey. Like his brother, Blake trains consistently, often sharpening his skills before teaching begins. He also enjoys competition, which gives him fresh perspective and keeps his teaching rooted in the same growth mindset he encourages in his students.
