In the Ninja Preschool taekwondo class we have been studying balance: to be centered and focused. We have practiced many fun drills to show our physical balance, but we are also talking about LIFE BALANCE!read more
We all want the very best for our kids! We want them to do well in school and life! I just read an incredible book called, “Smart Moves, Why Learning is Not All in Your Head” by Carla Hannaford, Ph. D. She explains how we learn so clearly. I was blown away by what I learned.read more
It's that time again! Life just seems to fly by when you are having fun and I always have fun when I'm at our Martial Arts School! We only have 6 opportunities per year for rank advancement and even though it seems like the last rank advancement was just yesterday, it really wasn't.
So why do we make such a big deal about rank advancement and testing? Because we have seen historically how to be a successful martial arts athlete! We have seen over and over, the students who have the greatest success in our program are the ones who take advantage of every opportunity to better them selves, which includes rank advancement.read more
Why do we teach taekwondo? We want you and your kids to be the best you can be in life! We want kids to be successful, in taekwondo, in school, in life! This is our ultimate goal and challenge. How are you successful? How much grit do you have?
I ran across a short Ted Talk video on grit today and it really inspired me! Taekwondo, martial arts is really a very great tool in teaching grit to kids!read more
What does being a black belt and being a child mean? Are we saying by letting kids earn black belts that we think they are able to defend themselves in any situation?
Honestly my goal of teaching taekwondo is NOT to teach self-defense as much as it is to teach kids self-control. I want teach kids the wisdom needed to live a life that never needs self-defense. To me what the kids get out of their martial arts journey is so much more meaningful than simply self-defense or how to fight.read more
Why private lessons? Don’t you teach everything they need to know in taekwondo classes? Why yes of course we do! But…it’s pretty impossible to critique the tiny movement details necessary for a great martial arts form in a classroom setting.read more
Hopefully it doesn’t seem like we over talk this! But we really have your child’s success in our minds when we encourage them to test! We have seen over and over again: the ones who do not test turn into quitters. Sad but true. The child is demotivated and doesn’t want to come to class. All their friends tested and moved to a new rank and they didn’t get to.read more
We just returned from a martial arts show and seminar series where we got tons of great ideas for making our martial arts school even better! We are still processing all the great ideas we learned and trying to decide which will work for us.read more

Since we have another tournament coming up very soon it seemed like a good time to talk about the why we should compete. Tammy and I have competed in nearly every local and national tournament since we were Green Belts. Are we some sort of competition junkies or something? No, not really. But I can say that one of my most memorable experiences in my martial arts journey, happened at a tournament. It was a priceless family moment for me that would not have happened, if I were not competing.read more
In an effort to add value to our adult Taekwondo and fitness program we were encouraged to offer meal plans. Which we thought was a really good idea until we came down to the practical side of it. There are a lot of meal plans available on line (one of the most interesting is at the bottom of the page) but I personally have never ever used someone else’s meal plans. When I look at meal plans I generally just glean ideas from them and tweak meals we already eat.read more
I recently heard of a student who told one of us that they didn’t see the point of testing. I’ve been pondering this a while and one of the best ways for me to ponder is to write.read more

So excited that one of our students took time from her very busy schedule to write down her taekwondo journey to share with others! So inspiring Chelsea! Thanks so much! We'd love to hear from others, adult taekwondo students or parents sharing their children's taekwondo stories. If you've been studying martial arts for any length of time you have a story! It amazes me the perseverance and inner strength we all build overcoming our own unique challenges.
I’d like to share some more of my personal taekwondo journey. In my previous blog I mentioned what I love about adult martial arts. Now I’d like to comment on some of the low points in my taekwondo journey.
